How bidding works

Register once

Create a free bidder account on our HiBid catalog. It covers every Cowley sale. For live sales you can also register at the door with ID.

Read the terms

Every sale lists buyer's premium, payment methods and the pickup window. Real estate terms include the deposit and closing date.

Preview, then bid

Inspect in person on preview day. Everything sells as-is, where-is. Bid live, or place a maximum bid online.

Pay and pick up

Winning bidders are invoiced immediately. Pay, then remove your items during the removal window in the sale terms.

For buyers

Same terms for everyone, out in the open.

A bidder in Lackawanna County and a bidder three states away see the same catalog, the same preview hours and the same terms.

  • The seller is committed to sell. You are not bidding against a maybe.
  • Sale date, terms and the pickup or closing window are set before you raise your hand.
  • Real estate buyers receive a complete due-diligence packet ahead of sale day.
  • Sales marked Live + online are simulcast, so local and out-of-state buyers compete on equal footing.
Bidder and seller questions

Before you bid

What is a buyer's premium?

A buyer's premium is a percentage added to the hammer price to arrive at the total purchase price. The rate is stated in each sale's terms.

Can I inspect before I bid?

Yes, and you should. Most sales have a scheduled preview listed with the sale; otherwise call (570) 344-9411 for an appointment. Everything sells as-is, where-is.

How does a real estate auction work?

At a Cowley real estate auction the property is offered on a set date, live on site or online. Bidders review the due-diligence packet and register with the required deposit. The high bidder signs a purchase agreement at the close of bidding, and closing typically follows within 30 to 45 days. See real estate auctions and listings or, if you are selling, how we sell.

What payment do you accept?

Accepted payment methods vary by sale and are listed in each sale's terms. Real estate purchases require a deposit in certified funds on sale day.

When do I pick up what I bought?

Each sale has a removal window in its terms. Items not removed in that window may be forfeited, so plan transport before bidding on large equipment.

Do I have to be there in person to bid?

Not usually. Online-only sales run entirely through our HiBid catalog, and sales marked Live + online are simulcast, so you can bid on HiBid while the auction runs on site. You can also place a maximum bid online ahead of time.

Where are Cowley auctions held?

On-site sales are held at the property or business being sold, across Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Online-only sales run through our HiBid catalog, with preview and pickup at the location listed in the sale terms. Our office is at 3350 North Main Avenue, Scranton, PA 18508.

How do I sell at auction with Cowley?

Call (570) 344-9411 or send the inquiry on our sell page. We inspect what you have and give you a written proposal: sale method, marketing plan, dates and costs. The full process is on how we sell.
